License Update Utility (RUS)

The license update utility (RUS) is a GUI-based license management tool on Windows. It allows the user to

  • collect status information about existing licenses on the system in order to request a license update or a new software license,
  • apply license updates,
  • transfer and remove software licenses (no longer supported in current Charon product versions).

This section provides the following information:

Starting the License Update Utility

The license update utility (also called HASPRUS) is started in different ways depending on the Charon product used.

Starting the License Update Utility for Charon-AXP/VAX/PDP

On versions before Charon-AXP/VAX/PDP version 4.8 this utility is called License Update Service. On versions 4.8 and higher it is called License Update Tool.

Charon-AXP/VAX/PDP Version 4.7

The license update utility is started via Start -> Charon -Utilities -> License Update Service:

Charon-AXP/VAX/PDP Version 4.8 and Later

The license update utility is started from the CHARON Virtual Machines Manager. The CHARON Virtual Machines Manager is started either via the desktop icon or from the start menu:

Once the CHARON Virtual Machines Manager has been started, go to the Host Information & Utilities tab and click on the License Update Tool button:

The license update utility is started via the system tray icon. Clicking on the icon will open a menu similar to the following:

Click on the Key update menu item to start the utility.

Features of the License Update Utility

The license update utility (HASPRUS) provides the following functions:

  • Creating a fingerprint file for requesting a new software license
  • Creating a C2V file to update an existing license
  • Applying a license file (new or update)
  • Transferring and removing a software license (no longer supported in current Charon product versions)

The user interface provided by the tool is the same, independent of the Charon emulator product used. The following sections describe the functions provided by the individual tabs of the tool.

The Collect Status Information Tab

On this tab you can extract the data needed to

  • request a new software license (fingerprint file),
  • update an existing license (C2V file).

Creating the Fingerprint File

To request a new software license, a fingerprint file has to be collected from the system.

The following image shows the tab Collect Status Information with the option Installation of new protection key selected. This is the setting for creating a fingerprint file.

After pressing the Collect Information button, you will be prompted to enter a location for storing the fingerprint file. Select a location and filename and save the file.

Please note: once a software license has been installed, current versions of the license update utility do not allow you to create another fingerprint without (temporarily) removing the installed software license. Therefore, save the created fingerprint file in case you need to create an additional software license for the same system (this will be the exception because in most cases the existing license can be updated with the required information). If you don't have the fingerprint file anymore and cannot create a second fingerprint because there is already a valid software license installed, please contact your Stromasys representative or VAR. If you have an obsolete/invalid software license on your system, you can remove it as described in Removing a License.

Creating a C2V File

To update an existing license, a C2V file must be created.

The following image shows the tab Collect Status Information with the option Update of existing product key selected. This is the setting for creating a C2V file for an existing software license and all hardware licenses.

After pressing the Collect Information button, you will be prompted to enter a location for storing the C2V file. Select a location and filename and save the file.

If there is more than one license key available on the system, the tool allows you to select the appropriate key to update as shown in the image below:

The Apply License File Tab

The function of this tab is to select and apply V2C files.

Applying V2C File(s)

This option installs a new software license or updates an existing license.

Important:

  • If a hardware USB key is to be updated, you will in most cases receive two files: a *_fmt.v2c file and a *.v2c file. The *_fmt.v2c file formats the dongle and the *.v2c file contains the updated license data.
  • In such cases the *_fmt.v2c file must be applied first.

1. To install the V2C file(s) for hardware and software licenses, select the option Apply License File.

2. Press the "..." button next to the Update File field. This will open a file browser.

3. Select the V2C file to be applied.

4. Click on Apply Update to complete the installation of the file.

The Transfer License Tab

This tab provides the functions for transferring and removing software licenses if the license parameters allow it.

However, this functionality is no longer supported by current Charon product versions. Also, all new software licenses are not transferable.

Hence, the detailed documentation of this tab has been removed.
