License Management Tasks - Overview

The details of the following tasks are described in License Management Tasks - Details.

Sentinel Software Installation Tasks

The Sentinel HASP runtime software must be installed on every system handling licenses – be it as a Charon host server, a system for license updates, or a (non-)dedicated license server. Depending on the Charon product version the HASP runtime software may not always be required on a client system to find remote network licenses provided by a license server. However, the HASP runtime software must always be installed to take full advantage of all product features and to avoid unexpected problems.

The necessary software is part of the individual Charon emulator product installation packages.

License Installation and Update Tasks

Once the Sentinel HASP runtime software has been installed, licenses can be installed, used and updated. The necessary steps differ slightly between the different license types, but consist roughly of the following steps:

  1. Generate a C2V file for an existing hardware or software license or a fingerprint file for a new software license. The resulting Customer-to-Vendor (C2V) file contains the license or system characteristics necessary for creating the license update or a new license. Please refer to Generating C2V and Fingerprint Files for details.
  2. Send the C2V file to Stromasys. Stromasys will use the data to create the necessary license or license update. You will receive one (software license) or two (most hardware license updates) V2C file(s): the Vendor-to-Customer file. You will also receive a text file summarizing the license content. Please refer to Sending C2V File to Stromasys and Obtaining V2C File.
  3. Apply the license data from the V2C file(s). This will install and activate your license or license update. Please refer to Applying/Updating License Data from V2C File(s) for details.

Verifying License Details

The license details can be displayed using various graphical or command-line tools. Please refer to Viewing a License for details.

Tasks Related to Network Licenses

Network licenses have additional requirements regarding firewall configurations and configuration of the Sentinel software. The required steps are described in Tasks Specific to Network Licenses.

Miscellaneous Tasks

A license and the supporting Sentinel software can be removed from a system (see Removing a License and Removing the Sentinel Runtime Software).

Depending on the platform, there are different ways to monitor the license status (see Monitoring Licenses).

User Rights Required for License-Related Tasks

The following table provides an overview of common tasks and the rights required to perform them:

* Please note: this is true for the individual license management tools. However, current Charon-AXP/VAX/PDP products on Windows platforms are managed using the Virtual Machine Manager (VMM) and all license management tools normally are also started from within VMM. VMM requires administrator privileges. Also the UAC function of Windows may require the user to enter an administrator password to start a program even if the action performed with the program would not require administrator rights.

** The Charon-SSP Manager can be run by an unprivileged user. Privileged actions are performed by the Charon-SSP Agent that runs as a system process and receives the required commands from the Manager.
