Problem

Charon-AXP or Charon-VAX/PDP for Windows reports "The media is write protected" error message(s).

Example:

20191127:145049:ERROR:2:00000225:scsi_disk_(2189): (19) The media is write protected. : FGA_1: Failed to write 16 blocks starting at 32. Block size 512, container \\.\PhysicalDrive(DevID = 2B4B-7336-6545-6100-00A0-9838-3044-6277).

20191127:145113:ERROR:2:00000225:scsi_disk_(2189): (19) The media is write protected. : FGA_15: Failed to write 1 blocks starting at 0. Block size 512, container \\.\PhysicalDrive(DevID = 6005-08B4-000B-1560-0002-2000-004D-0000).

Solution

  1. Check if Windows Disk Manager did not initialize unknown disks.
    The most probably, the disk drives contain a Windows partition table. When Charon sees Windows partition table, it turns access to read-only. This is done on purpose to protect Windows disks which might be exposed to emulator by mistake.
    If that's the case, please zero the whole disk drive so that Charon will be able to use it.
  2. Check related disks are online from the Windows Disk Manager utility.
