Support of AWS Regions in Charon Products

Please note:

  • This article is applicable only to the following:

    • VE license server

    • Charon-SSP AL marketplace product versions (independent if a public license server or a private AutoVE license server is used)

    • AWS cloud platform only

  • It is not applicable to the following:

    • Charon-AXP/VAX for VE licensing

    • Charon-PAR for VE licensing

    • Charon-SSP non-AL product variants, and Charon-SSP on other cloud platforms

Problem Description

Adding additional regions to the products requires a new product version that includes updating the relevant public certificates in the VE license server and in the Charon-SSP AL marketplace product for the AWS marketplace. Therefore, new regions introduced by AWS after the release of a Stromasys product are not immediately supported. This will cause problems during emulator start or during C2V file creation.

Symptoms:

  • When trying to connect to a public license server or a private AutoVE liense server from an instance that was created based on an AWS Charon-SSP AL marketplace image, the connection fails with an error similar to the following:
    INFO AWS Trying to login to license server
    ERROR AWS Failed to verify the instance document's signature.

  • When trying to create a C2V file, the c2v utility will fail with an error similar to the following:
    Failed to verify the instance document's signature
    Sanity check failed on AWS cloud

If error messages similar to the one above occur, one possible cause is the missing support of the AWS region in which the VE license server or the emulator host runs.

What to do in Case of such a Problem

The following table shows the status of AWS region support by the VE license server and Charon-SSP AL at the time of writing (based on Charon-SSP version 6.0.2 and VE license server version 2.4.7).

If you suspect a problem caused by missing region support, please first check the table for an already available newer product version including the support. If a newer product version supports your region, an upgrade to the new version can solve the problem.

If your region is not in the list or not supported, please contact your Stromasys representative.

1) The status of the Melbourne region as not supported is not related to a missing certificate update. The reason is that the underlying Rocky Linux system AMI used as the basis for the Charon-SSP AMI did not support this region. Thus, at the time of writing, it is not possible to launch a Charon-SSP AL instance in the Melbourne region.
