EWA0 failed to open interface to the packet filter on Charon-AXP and Charon-VAX

Problem

The following error message is displayed when trying to start Charon-AXP or Charon-VAX on Windows and prevents the virtual machine from starting:

... Access is denied. : EWA0 failed to open interface to the packet filter ...

The configured node failed to initialize due to configuration errors.

(info) This problem has been detected on Windows 7 and Windows 2008 R2 servers, mainly after a Windows server reboot and/or Windows update.

(warning) If these error messages are displayed after a warning message related to digital signature, please refer to the appropriate user's guide, Installation chapter / Software requirements. This may be due to Secure Boot restriction.

Solution

The following procedure must be applied in this situation:

  1. Open up "Control Panel → Network and Internet → Network and Sharing Center"
  2. Select "Change Adapter settings"
  3. Select each network interface used for Charon and with right click of mouse select "Disable"
  4. Select each network interface used for Charon and with right click of mouse select "Enable"
  5. Run the Charon Network Control Center and:
    1. Release all network interfaces dedicated to Charon to the host
    2. Dedicate those interfaces back to Charon
  6. Start CHARON
