Charon-AXP/VAX/PDP on Windows fails with exception code related to SYSFER.DLL
Problem
Not able to start Charon-AXP/VAX/PDP on Windows. Log file reports an ERROR message like this one:

Related products: Charon-AXP/VAX/PDP on Windows up to version 4.8 included. Version 4.9 and above are not concerned.
The problem is coming from Symantec Endpoint Protection (SEP) that affects Charon executable files. This does not affect running processes but prevent from restarting Charon virtual machines.
The Charon detailed report refers to SYSFER.DLL:

Solution
- Either uninstall and re-install Charon with SEP disabled or
- Restore the Charon installation folder just before the last time Charon was restarted successfully with SEP disabled or
- Upgrade to Charon-AXP/VAX/PDP version 4.9 minimum
Recommendations
- Disable SEP or, if not possible,
- Exclude the Charon installation folder from SEP scans and also the folders containing the Charon virtual disks if there are.
- Create application control exclusions for the Charon executable files
