Colors
Recommended color scheme for 'putty
' is (all other values can remain as they are by default):

Hint: in case the background color is black, the blue color used for some output could be difficult to read. It is possible to switch to an alternate color from the 'Preferences' menu option. This requires the terminal emulator to support 256 colors (xterm).
Line drawing
If the menu does not correctly display line drawing, you can change some parameters in putty.
Putty version 0.71 and above
Set the new parameter "UTF8linedraw=1"
- on Linux, add a line in .putty/sessions/yoursession containing this parameter (above)
- on Windows, change settings from "Window" → "Translation" pane and check the
...
- button "Enable VT100 line drawing even in UTF-8 mode"
You can keep your locale / codepage as UTF-8.
Putty version 0.70 and below
Change the terminal settings: if set to vt100 for example, you will see lowercase characters in place of menu borders.
To correct this, enter the following commands:
